TAVLA - Backgammon-inspired bar launches in the Hart Shoreditch Hotel

East London’s bar scene has welcomed a new addition with the launch of TAVLA. Located on the ground floor of new lifestyle hotel Hart Shoreditch Hotel London, Curio Collection by Hilton, the bar offers guests the chance to play Backgammon whilst sipping on barrel-aged cocktails and Turkish coffee to a soundtrack of vinyl DJs.

TAVLA, which means backgammon in Turkish, will have socialising at its core with backgammon boards on every table and a rotating roster of vinyl DJs playing every Thursday and Friday. The bar menu consist of updated classics and barrel-aged cocktails, alongside a selection of bar snacks and flatbreads inspired by the Levantine flavours showcased in the hotel’s in-house restaurant, BARBOUN.

House Classics will be given a playful twist including TAVLA’s take on the Bloody Mary, the Bloody Meryem (Ketel One Vodka, Casamigos Mezcal, lemon, tomato juice, Turkish spices and nigella & sumac salt) and the Düshesh (Villa Ascenti Gin, Belsazar Riesling, lime sherbet, cardamom bitters, lemon sorbet, lemon thyme and bubbles) which draws inspiration from a Sgroppino.

Unique barrel-aged cocktails will bring notes of wood, vanilla and tannins such as the TAVLA Old Fashioned (Bulleit Bourbon and Rye whiskeys, maple syrup, whiskey barrel-aged bitters and orange oils), The Turbo Negroni (Tanquery no. TEN Gin, barberry, coffee washed Belsazar Red and Campari) and the bar’s version of a Manhatten, the Marz (Belsazar Red & Rosé aromatised wines, Bulleit Rye, grapefruit bitters and orange oils).

In addition, TAVLA offers a selection of alcohol-free long drinks such as the Limonata (apricot, cardamom, lemon and double dutch soda) and Pomegranate Basil Gazoz (pomegranate, lime, basil and double dutch soda); as well as traditional Turkish coffee and tea.

The space itself has been thoughtfully-designed by London-based designers, Fabled Studio; featuring soft textures, furnishings and warm lighting. Textured woven stools are mixed in with lounge chairs in muted tones and softened textures giving the space a modern, residential feel.
