Bambuddha Ibiza: Where Dinner Becomes a Ritual

There are certain places in Ibiza that feel less like destinations and more like part of the island’s mythology. Bambuddha is undoubtedly one of them. Returning as the island awakens for a new season, it is impossible not to be swept up in the anticipation: the warm evenings, the promise of long dinners and the unmistakable feeling that the night might take you somewhere entirely unexpected.

Our evening began with an especially memorable encounter. We happened to meet the legendary John Moon, who founded Bambuddha in 1999 and whose vision created the extraordinary world that still exists today. Chatting with John was a genuine pleasure, there is an unmistakable authenticity and warmth about him, and hearing his stories and perspective gives you a much deeper appreciation of the place. Bambuddha is clearly not simply a restaurant he created; it is an extension of his travels, philosophy and wonderfully unconventional way of seeing the world.

That spirit is still very much alive under the direction of his son, Jonjon Moon, who has carried Bambuddha into a new chapter without losing the individuality that made it famous. In an age when so many destinations are constantly reinventing themselves, Bambuddha has managed to evolve while remaining unmistakably itself.

Walking through its bamboo gardens, surrounded by stone statues, candlelight and lush greenery, feels like stepping through a portal. Ibiza is suddenly far away. The restaurant unfolds almost theatrically, revealing intimate corners, low-lit bars and hidden garden spaces that encourage you to slow down and stay awhile.

The journey often begins at the Tantra Bar, where mixology is treated as modern alchemy. Foreplay, with lemongrass, kaffir lime, lavender and citrus, was fragrant and wonderfully fresh. The Flirtini, combining tequila, mezcal, hibiscus and cranberry, had considerably more attitude.

Then came dinner, and this is where Bambuddha’s philosophy really comes to life. Its MediterrAsian menu follows the ancient Spice Route from Spain through Southeast Asia to Japan. Signature dishes capture that essence. Yuzu Hamachi brings together bright citrus and delicate, sustainably farmed yellowtail with Japanese plum & chilli, alongside a selection of fresh sushi and sashimi. While the Dim Sum selection of beef gyozas, crispy truffle dumplings and spring rolls brings texture and temptation to the table. Deeper into the menu, Kowloon King Crab arrives rich and indulgent with spicy tobanjan sauce, and Malaysian Prawn Curry layers coconut and tamarind with warmth and depth.

As dinner progressed, the atmosphere subtly began to change. The lighting seemed to grow warmer, the music more present, and conversation gradually gave way to the music’s rhythm. This transition from dinner to something altogether more nocturnal happens almost imperceptibly. One moment you are sitting beneath the candlelight sharing plates; the next, you realise the evening has acquired an entirely different energy.

Under Jonjon Moon, that story continues with remarkable confidence. The original spirit remains – adventurous, sensual, eclectic and unapologetically free – while the experience feels completely at home in contemporary Ibiza.

Bambuddha is, ultimately, much more than somewhere to have dinner. It is an evening that unfolds around you. You arrive curious, sit down for a cocktail, share a few plates, promise yourself you will leave at a sensible hour, and then the music starts. Naturally, you stay.
