Introducing: Fearann Mar Gin - A Celebration of the Scottish Coast with Old Course Hotel

A new and exclusive gin is making waves in the spirits world as the luxury five-star resort, Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St Andrews, partners with the nearby distillery, Darnley’s, to create a premium spirit that truly embodies the flavours and characteristics of the Scottish coast. Named Fearann, Mar, which translates to "the Earth, the Sea" in Gaelic, this gin pays homage to the stunning location where land meets sea on the East Fife coast.

The collaboration between the Old Course Hotel and Darnley’s brings together the essence of the region using only natural botanicals, including locally sourced and foraged ingredients. With a deep-rooted heritage in Fife, the Wemyss family owns Darnley’s, making them the ideal partner for this endeavour.

Fearann, Mar Gin is exclusively available in Old Course Hotel's bars and restaurants, offering guests a chance to savour its unique coastal finish. The gin is crafted with sea buckthorn, milk thistle, sugar kelp, juniper, coriander seeds, angelica, and marigold petals. The packaging also stands out, as it comes in sustainable pouches that are both reusable and recyclable, reducing the carbon footprint.

“We’re thrilled to launch this exclusive gin, a product that champions our beautiful Scottish coast. Collaborating with a local distillery was hugely important to us and with Darnley’s expertise, Fife heritage and use of only natural ingredients they really are a perfect fit and we’re excited for this partnership to grow. We’re looking forward to guest’s enjoying a Fearann, Mar G&T or one of the specially designed cocktails at Old Course Hotel this summer." - Phyllis Wilkie, General Manager, Old Course Hotel

The launch of Fearann, Mar couldn't have been more timely, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Kohler Co., the owners of Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. This marks a celebration of Kohler's legacy of innovation, luxury hospitality experiences, and valued partnerships.

Darnley’s gin distillery is located in the village of Kingsbarns, on the grounds of Wemyss Castle. They transformed a derelict farm cottage into their distillery and grow as many botanicals as the Scottish weather allows in their surrounding gardens. For ingredients that require warmer climates, they source from trusted partners worldwide. The gin-making process starts with the highest quality British-grown grain spirit in the London Dry Style, and no additional flavours or sugars are added after distillation. The carefully selected botanicals are steeped in the base spirit, allowing their essential oils and flavours to infuse before distillation. Finally, using the freshest Scottish water, the gin is diluted to bottling strength.

“As a brand, we are passionate about the land around us and we are always inspired by our landscape, so when the Old Course Hotel wanted to create a gin with the same inspiration, we jumped at the chance. Fearann, Mar captures our location on the Fife coast perfectly - we've used a mixture of local botanicals and some sourced from our trusted farmers, to make this incredibly unique gin.” - Aaron Milligan, Gin Distiller, Darnley’s Gin

Expert mixologists at Old Course Hotel have designed two signature cocktails using Fearann, Mar, and for the perfect serve, they recommend mixing it with premium tonic and garnishing with an orange wedge.

Fearann, Mar Gin is a true celebration of the Scottish coast, a testament to the collaboration between Old Course Hotel and Darnley’s, and an invitation for guests to savour the flavours of the land and sea in every sip.
